Noun [Ancient Greek]

IPA: /arˈka.ni/, /arˈka.ni/, /arˈka.ne̝/ (note: 1ˢᵗ CE Egyptian), /arˈka.ni/ (note: 4ᵗʰ CE Koine), /arˈka.ni/ (note: 10ᵗʰ CE Byzantine), /arˈka.ni/ (note: 15ᵗʰ CE Constantinopolitan)
Etymology: The connection with ἄρκυς (árkus, “hunter's net”) is doubtful. The suffix is also seen in δρεπάνη (drepánē, “sickle”), καπάνη (kapánē, “chariot”) and θηγάνη (thēgánē, “whetstone”). Probably a loanword, perhaps from Pre-Greek, according to Beekes.
